Social Dilemma

My favorite parts of The Social Dilemma were the plain interview parts. The interviewees were very knowledgeable and conveyed that well. The re-enactments were mostly a nice touch because most people can really connect to seeing the effects of social media visually through the suffering of the younger generation, but it feels like a bit much at times. Social media does have many problems that have bad implications on us, but the documentary seems like it is occasionally fearmongering with visualizing us as tiny, useless, and replicable things that social media apps use.

This is very culturally relevant because the effects of social media is seen all over the place. Everyone is now using a phone for a large portion of the day and that makes us susceptible to being manipulated. That is why a film like this is very important to showing us how detrimental these apps can be, even though we know most of it.

Ultimately, I believe The Social Dilemma is important for advocating for the dangers of social media, but there will be little actual change because of it. Large corporations and advertisers will continue to take our data and try to profit off us and laws to restrict this are not as impactful as we may think. The most important thing to come away from the film is knowledge about what technology is doing to us and for us to act more consciously when using our phones. Getting correct information is more important and difficult than ever, and that makes The Social Dilemma a must-watch, although flawed documentary.
