End of Semester Recap

My favorite screenings were Lost in Translation and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Both of these movies had slower pacing but I liked being able to look back after finishing and appreciating the tiny details that added to the story. They had great soundtracks that fit and really relatable characters, which I think is the most important aspect to memorable films. I learned that I can notice some creative choices like camera angles while watching and understand the reason why in the moment.

Tenet, Dune, and the Snyder Cut of Justice League are a few movies I wish I was able to watch in theatres. all three movies have very cinematic moments and really felt like they were made to be watched and enjoyed in a big crowd. For example, I had a harder time liking Tenet because the audio mixing and playing it at home made it hard to understand the dialogue and key exposition wasn't clear. Some argue that this was Nolan's artistic intent, but I think the experience of watching these movies in theatres with audio systems designed for movies would have been more enjoyable compared to watching at home.

I agreed with many of the classes' recommendations like Tarantino and Christopher Nolan films but my favorite new film of 2022 is Everything Everywhere All at Once. It has everything you could want, from technical editing and cinematography to the more generally appealing action and comedy. I was impressed how it managed to fit so many ideas and themes all in a few hours and that would make it a good watch and fun conversation to have in class.
